A Beautiful Beast
The first thing that struck me was just how small this lens is, even smaller than I expected after reading several other reviews. Petite controls make the lens feel even smaller, it is light but weighty for a lens this small. (I weighed it at 198gms) When compared to my Fuji 16mm f2.8 lens it is the same length but with a slightly narrower body it is also heavier the 16mm which I weighed at 153gms. Build quality is of a high standard with a solid all metal construction I found it to be reminiscent of Zeiss lenses. It’s a beautiful beast of a lens with good tonal response and a different but pleasing colour feel to that produced by Fuji lenses. It’s an individual among a field of perfectly engineered Fuji lenses designed to work together as one seamless system. The lens can produce an Interesting solar flare with red and orange tinges perhaps this could be resultant from the FROG EYE front element coating, which has a dark reddish lushness about it. I found this lens works well at anything from f5.6 to f11 producing crisp sharp images. It's only weakness is a definite vignetting although this can be quickly fixed in post (most manual lenses have this issue anyway). A great lens to add to your kit for ultra wide composition or astro-photography applications. The small size and low weight makes this a perfect lens for those like me who hike to remote locations and must limit what they can carry for each expedition, it will be a part of my short kit at least for the near future.
